Take a Driving Tour of the Lake District

Lake District

If your idea of a great trip is touring beautiful roadways through the countryside of England, you will want to consider visiting the Lake District. It is a beautiful area that will provide you with plenty of places to stop and take photos and videos. Touring the areas in a vehicle will present you with some great places to stay, as well. Consider taking several days to explore the area and really get a feel for the roads.

There’s a Lot to Enjoy in the Lake District

One of the reasons that many people love visiting and driving through the Lake District is the surrounding natural beauty. Make sure that you take some time to get out of the vehicle and out onto some of the hiking trails, as well. There are plenty of places to explore in the mountains and hills, and around the lakes. You can check out Scafell Peak, the highest peak in England, as well as Wastwater, which is the deepest lake in the country.

Of course, you will also find some villages to explore. They have their own attractions, places to dine, and to go shopping. Other places to consider visiting include Derwentwater, Keswick, Rydal, and Coniston. In some locations, you might want to ditch the road for a bit and take to the water in a boat. The Lake District makes for a nice and relaxing holiday.

When you are travelling through the Lake District, you can start in Kendal. Head north into the Lake District National Park and travel toward Windermere. This is the largest lake in England and is a sight that you will not want to miss. Once you make it to Windermere, you can then head north and through some charming villages including Ambleside and Grasmere. You might want to take some time in Grasmere to check out the famous poet William Wordsworth’s cottage. The Lake District is famous for many writers in addition to Wordsworth. These include Shelley, Keats, and even Beatrix Potter, who created Peter Rabbit.

Always Plan Your Trip Carefully

Regardless of how long you plan to be travelling and driving through the Lake District, you will want to plan your trips as carefully, as possible. Know the places where you can refuel, book your stays early, and always dress for the weather. Be sure to have some snacks, as well. Have at least a simple itinerary and be sure to have a map with you in addition to your phone.

The Route

There are many scenic driving routes you can take through the Lake District. You could take the Keswick Loop, which is a popular option that is about 37 kilometres. Start in Keswick and go through the Newlands Valley and then to Honister Pass, back through Keswick, and then out to the villages of Rosthwaite and Seatoller.

Another drive to consider is from Whitehaven to Silloth. This will take you to the seaside, which is just a short distance west of the Lake District National Park. From Whitehaven, you will take the A596 and A596 on the Solway Coast through Workington. The route will follow the coast through small towns and beautiful scenery.

These are just a couple of the drives you can take once you reach the Lake District. You may want to take several on your holiday.
