I have a Van. What Insurance do I need?

Social, Domestic and Pleasure

The answer depends on what you’re going to use your van for. If you have a van for personal reasons, perhaps because of a hobby such as carrying your fishing tackle, then you will need Insurance in a similar manner to Car Insurance. This cover is known as personal or private van insurance, and the type of cover required will be ‘Social, Domestic and Pleasure’, often abbreviated to ‘SD&P’. It is important to point out that this cover is for your own personal use only and absolutely excludes any use in connection with your occupation, even commuting to and from a place of work. We are able to offer competitive quotes for this type of insurance.

Commercial Van Insurance

If your Van is going to be used in connection with any part of a business, including travelling to and from a business, you must have Commercial Van Insurance, there are a range of options available reflecting the large number of commercial uses ranging from carriage of own and other goods to Minibus Insurance. It is important that you choose the correct cover that reflects how you use your Van. If you use your van for a different class of use than your policy allows, your policy will be invalid and could leave you liable for not having Insurance.

Commercial Van Insurance can be tailored to the specific needs of your commercial requirements. This can include things like cover for tools and/or other contents. We advise that you use the services of an experienced Broker such as ourselves to get the best advice!

Considerations...

  • Insurance is compulsory*
  • It brings peace of mind
  • Investment protection

*Third Party Insurance is a legal requirement in the United Kingdom.

How much will my Insurance cost?

Like car insurance, your age, your driving record and where you live are important, but for Commercial Van Insurance your commercial use is critically important too. You need to make sure your Insurer fully understands the nature of your commercial activities.

Your van insurance will be determined by the following factors

Now more than ever, it pays to shop around for affordable van insurance. By comparing insurance quotes today, you could save as much as £668*.

1

Your Age

Drivers under 20 are statistically 33% more likely to be involved in an accident. Because of this, younger van drivers usually face higher premiums. On the other hand, older drivers with a solid no-claims history may benefit from lower quotes through a no-claims bonus.

2

Your Occupation

If your job keeps you on the road for long hours, it can push up your insurance costs. Higher annual mileage and driving during peak traffic times increase the likelihood of being involved in an accident.

3

Your Location

Where you live has a direct impact on your premium. Accident rates, congestion levels, and local crime all affect risk. Parking on a driveway or in a garage can reduce this, helping protect your van from theft and accidental damage.

4

Driving Record

Penalty points, fines, or a history of risky driving make insurers view you as higher risk. Research shows three penalty points can raise premiums by around 5%, while six points could increase costs by up to 25%.

5

Claims History

If you’ve made claims in the past, insurers may assume you’re more likely to make them again. Taking an advanced driving course could help counter this perception and may even unlock discounts with some providers.

6

Medical History

Certain medical conditions can affect your ability to drive safely, which insurers will factor into your policy cost. Serious conditions must be reported to the DVLA, but even minor issues such as side effects from medication or seasonal hay fever can influence driving ability.

7

No Claims Discount

More than three million UK drivers could be saving money through no-claims discounts. In fact, building a strong no-claims history can reduce your premiums by as much as 60–70%.

8

Provider & Policy Choice

Each insurer assesses risk differently. Some specialise in certain drivers or policies, like black box insurance, and may offer cheaper rates. That’s why comparing multiple providers before buying is key to finding the best deal.
